MY 4-YEARS JOURNEY

HOW I STARTED

People always ask me which film school I studied in when I was in university. To their surprise, I tell them "I actually studied Journalism".

When I was young, I wanted to a writer. I wanted to change the world with my writing. I wanted to be a journalist that brought light into stories that people needed to hear... But that was a dream I had when I was in University.

Along the journey, I found the joy in telling journalistic stories through the visual medium. I realised how engaging it was to deliver a story in video form. But it wasn't the outcome that appeased me. It was the whole process. The entirety of planning your shots, figuring out story angles and how the visuals should go hand-in-hand with the story, all made me realise the beauty in filmmaking. From then on, I only had one thing in mind: it was to make videos.

CAREER PROGRESSION

I started in an internship as a social media cum videographer for a social enterprise called Arus Academy. Through their belief in me, I was gifted the opportunity to work with them full-time.

At Arus Academy, as I was the only videographer at that time, I was blessed to learn everything, from pre-production all the way to post-production. That obviously gave way to having my own team with the company where I was able to manage a team of creative videographers.

2-Years in my journey, I stepped in a full-blown production house called Storyfrontier. Here, I was under the guidance of a DP who guided me to learn the ropes of camera and lighting work, where I hope to become a DP myself.

MY FUTURE OUTLOOK

4-years in, I am now a Director of Photography freelancer with a production house under my name called Negative Films Productions. My hope is to continue creating amazing stories with a stunning collage visuals in the films I am blessed to be a part of.

My journey is still a long way to go, but I hope to continuously learn and develop my skills. As I head into my 5th year, I realise that it takes more than just holding a camera to succeed in the industry. In this day of age, you need to be a Producer, a Director, and an Editor. All of these are the roles I want to continue sharpen as without them, the sustainability of being a DP for long isn't possible.
